Acolyte Vern recovered from his injuries ahead of schedule and joined us in our search for an owner of a 'shard'. This search lead us to the quorum, the ruling body on Sinophia. We arranged for a meeting with the quorum but they were unable to see us due to the events I shall shortly describe.
Upon entering the quorum building, we were told by a confused guard that we had already arrived. Before he had time to expand on this odd statement, an explosion occurred further into the building and the power went out. The guards went to deal with the source of the problem and we soon heard a fire-fight in progress. We were assailed by a number of doppelgängers resembling four of our number. The doubles were hardier and stronger than your humble servants, but we eventually prevailed. It is troubling to note that all of the doubles were empowered by the warp. Further investigation of the beings was impossible as the bodies self-immolated upon what can only be assumed to be death.
The rest of the quorum building was a shambles. Some of the ruling body had been bloodily dismembered, and the rest had fled. In one office, the master of rolls and her staff had been shot in a methodical 'execution' style. A shard had been stolen from her desk drawer. We have concluded that the chaos in the quorum chamber was a distraction and the master of rolls was the real target. A witness saw the master of rolls running away from the building clutching a small package. This was in all likelihood a doppelgänger making off with the shard.
Despite the setback, we are investigating through alternative channels and should resolve the issue soon. Out efforts have been somewhat obstructed by the violent clashes between the local enforcers and the undertow gangs. The conflict has spread from the sinks to other parts of the city and are increasing in intensity. We will monitor the situation and make recommendations to the Adeptus Arbites as appropriate.
