My Lord Inquisitor, herein follows a true and accurate description of the mission performed by your most obedient acolyte cell on the planet Sinophia Magna.

As per orders, we made a detour to Sinophia Magna to investigate the rash of brutal murders that took place there. I will report that the captain of the Queen of Sepheris was most happy to accommodate our course correction once he saw who authorised the change. The crew were less appreciative and entered into a short fight with your humble servant Vern. As a result, Vern was too injured to join us on Sinophia until the second day of our investigations

The murdered citizens were all owners of an artefact known as a 'shard'. The thirteen shards were fragments of a mirror which reputedly had the power to capture and control a daemonic entity. The perpetrators of the murders were seeking to repair the mirror by gathering and combining the shards. In the course of our investigations, we obtained two of the thirteen shards. Upon further examination, each contained a localised warp distortion which combined with the distortions of nearby shards to form one more powerful distortion. While we investigated the murders, the perpetrators attacked the ruling body of Sinophia, the quorum. They succeeded in killing the leader of the quorum and taking his shard. With the collapse of authority, the city descended into violence. Capitalising on the breakdown to increase their territory, the undertow gangs, a local criminal element, engaged in a series of street battles with the local enforcers. The civil unrest in the city has since died down with both sides restoring law and order, after a fashion, in the areas under their control.

We discovered that the instigator of the plot was none other than Precinct Marshall Skarmen, leader of the local Adeptus Arbites. Using heretical techniques, he had animated a number of cadavers and used them to find the shards. During the chaos created by the gangs Skarman killed the remaining arbitrators and bent their corpses to his will. He used these puppets to ambush and destroy elements of the local enforcers, killing the leader of the enforcers and taking his shard.

With some difficulty, our cell was able to neutralise Skarman and destroy his minions. His personal effects have been sealed and sent for purification/destruction. The mirror and the demon bound inside it were banished to the warp before they could do any harm to the citizens of Sinophia Magna. To ensure that no taint remained, we caused the generators in the base of the Arbites stronghold to overload, destroying the building completely.

We recommend a new contingent of Adeptus Arbites be assigned to Sinophia Magna as soon as possible. There is the fear that the void left by the betrayal of Skarmen could lead to anti-Arbites sentiment. This could quickly broaden to anti-Imperial sentiment, a dangerous attitude. We also recommend observers be sent to monitor the new balance of power between the undertow gangs and the enforcers. While an uneasy peace has developed, intervention by sector authorities may be required.

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your report on your successful mission. A cleanse-team is en-route on board the Arm Mentor to deal with any remaining artefacts and to purge any taint. Until then, you are to use the local enforcers to enforce the Emperor's will and ensure that the populace of Sinophia Magna stay loyal to the Imperium. Apart from the execution of the previous order, consider yourselves at liberty until the Arm Mentor arrives in system, at which time you will receive further orders.

The Arm Mentor will also carry a replacement Adeptus Arbites force, to re-establish Imperial law with all due haste. Ensure that they are given all due recognition when they arrive.

I am pleased that you have managed to deal with perhaps a more significant problem that we had been anticipating in such an expedient manner. That the mirror shards of which you speak have been lost to the warp is of some concern, as such sources of taint should be dealt with properly, and their retrieval and confirmed destruction would have been of greater service to the Imperium. The cleanse-team will be able to ensure that no such taint remains. However, as you have not been fully trained to deal with such things you have performed admirably well considering the circumstances.

The MERCHANT VESSEL QUEEN OF SEPHERIS is hereby issued with an order of DETAINMENT on this date 3 154 815 M41, by His Majesty's loyal INQUISITION, for the crime of INTERFERING WITH AGENTS OF THE INQUISITION.

All shipyards are not to permit the above vessel to depart from harbour once docked. All passengers and crew are to be detained by the Adeptus Arbites until further notice by the Inquisition. Lethal force is authorised in the execution of this order.
