Character Background
"Borodzo? lovely place this time of year, at least it used to be. Now that it's under new management, well... let's just say I haven't been back in a while. Oh I see, you want a story... Well I suppose I ought to indulge you, we are travelling companions after all."
"Borodzo is, was, a small duchy nestled in a valley in the western slopes of the Forbidden Cliffs. The valley was fertile and the people pleasant. Cliché? certainly, but true nonetheless. We traded a little with Draccliff but kept mainly to ourselves. I was the third child of the village weaver and his wife, a minor elven mage. Unfortunately, I was born with neither my father's talent for cloth or my mother's magic. After I came of age I found there was no set place for me in the village and so, like so many other second and third sons, I left for the city of Borodzo."
"There I found employment in the Borodzan Guard. After a month of training, I was sent along with a group of recruits for mandatory service in the border guard. The Borodzan border guard patrolled our forested border with Draccliff. We tracked down poachers and smugglers and assisted stranded travellers. The work was not overly taxing but it was interesting, every day bought something new. Soon enough, I rose to the rank of sergeant. After a year, those with the most aptitude for forest work stayed on. The others, myself included, returned to the city to be assigned based on their ability."
"I was given a position as squad leader in the city guard. With my squad, I patrolled the merchant district and the markets, resolving disputes, apprehending criminals and protecting the innocent. Well, it wasn't all like that, mostly it was just boring. After three years of exemplary service, I was picked for the palace guard as sergeant in the day watch. That's when the war started."
"You probably remember the Draccliff war of succession right? Nasty business it was. The king died and his twin sons bickered over the crown. The bickering became an argument, the argument a fight and eventually a war. Both summoned nobles loyal to them and tore the nation apart with their armies. One of the sons, Dracclough if I recall correctly, was slowly backed into a corner of the country and was on the ropes. He sent emissaries to Borodzo asking for military aid but we declined. Our duke felt it was not our place to intervene in the politics of other nations and claimed neutrality. This turned out to be our undoing."
"Dracclough managed to beat his brother in the decisive Battle of the Emerald Peak. After slaying his brother in single combat, he took the throne and started settling old scores. The properties of the nobles who had taken arms against him were claimed by the crown and the nobles exiled. Then, he turned his eyes further afield. Remembering the slight we had given him, he turned his armies towards the nation of Borodzo. We tried diplomacy but Dracclough was not inclined to listen. With much trepidation, we raised an army of militia bolstered with the guard and a few trained reservists."
"It was almost insulting how quickly the experienced Draccliffite troops brushed aside our army. The capital lay wide open and there was nothing we could do except surrender. We watched as our duke knelt before Dracclough offering him his sword and with it the nation. With a smirk, Dracclough took the blade and decapitated our lord. This wanton bloodshed did not sate his thirst for misguided revenge. He decreed that the population of Borodzo leave and their lands be resettled by loyal Draccliffites. The population of Borodzo was formed into four large columns and thus our mass exodus began."
"As one of the few guardsmen left, I helped lead one of the refugee columns east over the mountains into Ostvale. We were cursed by an early snow that year and many didn't make it. Those that did were greeted with sympathy by the people of Ostvale. No longer possessing a land to call home, the diaspora moved east across the nation. As we moved east, groups of Borodzans stopped and made their homes among the native Ostvalites. Others split off and forged their destiny elsewhere. By the time we reached Ostvale Hold, we numbered in the hundreds. Many of those left settled nearby. Those of us who could not settle down kept moving. Eventually our small company parted ways somewhere in the vicinity of Ironshore Point."
"My old captain in the palace guard and I took work as bodyguards for merchant caravans and slowly moved north. The work was easy and paid well, it helped take our minds off our loss. Unfortunately, as we learned earlier, all good things come to an end. The captain was scouting ahead of the caravan when he ran into a group of goblin raiders. Before he could escape, he was struck by a number of their crude arrows. His horse staggered back to the caravan, it's rider clinging onto life. We helped him down and eased his pain but there was nothing we could do. As he lay dying, he revealed to me the ducal seal. He had retrieved it from the body of our duke and had kept it safe. He entrusted it to my possession saying that its time would come again."
" I left the service of that particular merchant not long after and headed even further north. As I travelled I was able to gather my thoughts. Eventually, I decided that Borodzo would not return to us, but we could create a new realm in its image. First, we would need lands. Long I mulled over this detail but at long last, the answer came to me. If I could become one of the king's knights, I would be granted land and then I could summon those of my people who were left to settle it, creating a new future for us. It is to this end that I travel now."
"Well, now you've heard it. It's not a great tale that will be told down the ages, but it's my tale and in the end, that's what matters.
