DM's Description

Ironhedge Bridge is a town in the North of the Nation of Ostvale.

Situated where the Steel River broadens and slows, Ironhedge Bridge is a lively trading town where numerous villages and outlying farms sell their produce, for barges to take further down river to the cities of Redlake even all the way to Ironshore Point.

Ironhedge Bridge is built around the Ironhedge Keep and Iron Bridge. The Iron Bridge is a wonderous large-span iron girder bridge, whose construction mystifies scholars to date. The Iron Bridge was the only road crossing of the fast-flowing Steel River for generations, and Ironhedge Keep was built to control the crossing.

The town grew around Ironhedge Keep as the populace gathered there both for the convenience of the crossing and also the protection of the keep. The town was eventually walled with stone quarried in Corhollow to the west after a series of devastating bandit raids, where much of the town to the North of the river was burned. To help pay for the construction of the walls, a tithe of one gold piece per cart to cross the Iron Bridge was levied. This led to the construction of Shadows Bridge, a rickety construction of stone and timber, by the Merchants' Guild, to avoid the tithe. The then-ruler of Ironhedge Bridge, Lord Ildiran, sent the town guard to take control of the new bridge, which led to a standoff between them and the enforcers of the Merchants' Guild. Under threat of the merchants leaving the town, they were allowed to keep control of their bridge, but forced to allow foot traffic to cross without charge. As a private bridge, access to Shadows Bridge is strictly controlled by the enforcers of the Merchants' Guild and only carts with appropriate passes are allowed to cross.

The town's current ruler is technically Lord Tiaden, a well-mannered man who is more interested in the luxuries of life rather than looking to such mundane matters as taxes, defence, or anything else to do with running a town. He disdains the cold stone floors of Ironhedge Keep, and lives in a manor just up Daright Road. Actual day-to-day running of the town is handled by Sir Reldler, a retired old knight, and his staff.

Probably the most interesting thing to the new arrival at Ironhedge Bridge are the two inns. The first, the Jackrabbit, is owned by a lovable halfling by the name of Miss Sirume Tonianess, and is a simple but lively place which many regular visitors from the surrounding villages stay at. The second, Eternal Flame run by Tinould'o, a charming male Dragonborn, caters more to those more well-off and is a more respectable, subdued affair. Both however lack one thing: the famous wine produced by Vergha's Vinyard, which the elusive Vergha will only sell to individuals and not businesses.

Parks and Gardens

  • Forbidden Park is a small walled garden to the West of Ironhedge Keep, so named as it used to be the private retreat of Lord Ildiran.
  • Hillsong Park is a small walled garden on the South side of Ironhedge Bridge, on Deep Road across from the Eternal Flame inn. This park is lively and often gatherings, hosted by Tinould'o the owner of the Eternal Flame, are held here.
  • Shadowed Grove is a wild patch of ground on the North bank of the Steel River, close to the Shadows Bridge. Even though the trees here are quite scattered and the sky is visible from beneath them, no light seems to reach the ground which is permanently in shadow. Locals have not dared to cut down these trees for development, and many avoid the grove.

Bridges

  • Iron Bridge is a wondrous large-span iron girder bridge. The toll to cross is one gold piece per cart.
  • Shadows Bridge is a rickety stone and timber bridge, controlled by the Merchants' Guild. Only approved carts are allowed to cross, however pedestrian traffic isunhindered (except when a cart iscrossing).
