Cloak and Dagger - River and River - An Immaculate Conception - Down the Trapdoor - The Plot Thickens

Chapter 3 - Civic Improvements

  • Wind Follower's abductors take him to their secret lair somewhere under the city.
  •  ???: "The Boss wants to see you"
  • He's left in a dark antechamber.

  • River and Carver travel to an abandoned quarry to gather stone for the dam.
  • Carver by name, Carver by nature.
  • River turns a dilapidated shack into a cart in around four seconds.
  • River: "Hmmmmmm, no I think it should be able to be a boat too."
  • Five seconds later, the cart boat is ready.
  • River: "Carver, are you done yet?"
  • They lug the stone across the river and assemble a dam with spillway.
  • Some of the river is now diverted to send water into the city's sewer network.

  • Ahead of the show, Nicole is feeling quite ill.
  • Oboreta is somewhat exasperated.
  • Nicole: "It's okay boss, I should be fine for tonight"

  • Wind follower awakes to find some of his drug.
  • He packs a pipe of it.
  •  ???: "Do you need a match Gentle Breeze?"
  • Wind Follower is freaked out that this guy knows his real name.
  • The mysterious figure has a job that needs doing, something Gentle Breeze/Wind Follower has done before.
  • Smells like an assassination.
  • Wind Follower agrees and his possessions are returned.
  • The name of his target it written on a scrap of paper, the ink fades as he reads it.

  • The god of the sewers awaits River and Carver atop the walls.
  • The milita are freaked out by the spirit's appearance.
  • Glistening Guardian of the Channel: "Thank you lords, I already feel the flow returning."
  • An awkward silence ensues.
  • River: *Cough* "So, about that information..."
  • The god leads the pair along the path the spirits took and indicates a block of buildings that they may have come from.
  • The houses are near the western gate and the new Pale Horse encampment.

  • River wants to summon more spirits to help him re-arrange the library.
  • Aldbur is taking River and Carver to the show after dinner.
  • River: "Will dinner take four hours?"

  • The show is intense through copious use of performance charms.
  • It is a thinly veiled homage to Aldbur and his circle.
  • Back in the day there were five immaculate monks, devout and brave.
  • They traveled the land, kicking the shit out of demons and uppity spirits.
  • One by one, monks are killed leaving only the fire aspect.
  • Sad and alone, he comes across a beautiful woman in the woods and they fall in love.
  • They build a city together but their happiness is interrupted by a snake demon.
  • The snake whispers in the fire aspect's ear, telling him that the woman he is in love with is anathema.
  • With heavy heart, the monk sacrifices his love for his faith and the two are consumed in a giant fireball.
  • The monk walks out of the fire holding a golden child which he raises to the sun.

  • The performance instills an urge in the audience to 'live a little'.
  • Aldbur is not impressed.
  • River decides he'll live a little by summoning two spirits. WITHOUT TELLING ALDBUR FIRST!

  • Wind Follower confesses his guild entanglements to Aldbur.
  • Aldbur is not concerned with civilian government or commerce.
  • He's more worried about the wild (or is that wyld?) bandits and the Shadow Moon.

  • At the after party there is a ton of drinking.
  • Oboreta thinks everyone is 'just fine'.
  • Did anyone get the feeling we failed a spot check?

  • River uses elementals to sort the library into his bespoke ordering system.
  • The River Decimal System is born.
  • He uses another elemental to clear out the antechamber so he can use it as an office.

  • River and Carver collar Wind Follower and get him to help them investigate the source of the spirits.
  • A small trapdoor is found that looks mighty suspicious.
  • Wind Follower listens and hears nothing.
  • He stealthily opens the hatch and motions for Carver to go first.
  • Carver jumps in. While he is in mid-air a spirit materialises and goes to punch him in a delicate spot.
  • By delicate spot, I mean the dick.
  • A further spirit appears above and swipes at River.
  • Wind Follower momentarily disappears from view and puts an arrow through the spirit's head.
  • River then chops its head off with his hand.

  • Below, in the basement, Carver and the spirit tumble around in a death ball.
  • Carver finally gets a handle on the spirit and grapples it.
  • While he is distracted, two assassins stab him in the shoulder and back.
  • Ow.
  • Carver flexes, ripping the knife from the grip of one of the assassins.
  • The other assassin is hanging on for dear life and is crushed when Carver jumps and lands heavily on him.
  • The spirit is being swung around like a wrecking ball.
  • Carver uses a ton of essence and a golden pillar of light explodes from the open trapdoor.
  • River casts a spell where he can shoot energy from his fists.
  • Wind Follower makes do with normal arrows.
  • The two follow into the room and finish off the last assassin.
  • The spirit huddles in fear of the obvious solar in the room.

  • The chamber has five pillars each roughly corresponding to one of the elemental poles.
  • There are about a hundred medallions, similar to the ones we found hanging from the central pillar.
  • Some are missing - corresponding to the ones we've found.
  • There are spots where the floor has been worn from worship.
  • These look like they are the positions of cities in creation relative to the poles.
  • There is a track in the floor around the central pillar that looks like the coastline of the blessed isle.
  • This is bad.
