Episode 8 - Recriminations

  • River leaves to investigate the place of power.
  • He apologises for his inability to do more for the wounded but he is in a bad way himself.
  • He forms the cloud and, ensconced in a comfy bed, heads off.

  • The others ride back to the Glen.
  • The Immaculate Conception's tent is still set up outside town.
  • They've been asked to stay on to provide entertainment for the Calibration festival.
  • Oboreta introduces her newest member to the troupe - Katerina (the cat lady).
  • Slow clap for the lame pun.

  • Their reception in town is lukewarm.
  • There is some scattered cheering but not as much as would normally be expected.
  • The riders pick up on murmurs about abandonment and the mercenaries just being mercenaries after all.
  • The Dragonlord is annoyed.
    • Dragonlord Tepet: "I fulfilled the letter of my contract, so fuck 'em. Ungrateful bastards."
  • Mr. Ronwood, the proprietor of the inn in the village of Wood managed to escape and he has told everyone about how the Pale Horse abandoned the village to the bandits.
  • Some militia come out to meet the Pale Horse and tell the Dragonlord that Aldbur wants to see her.
  • Her troops can camp outside the city in the same spot they did previously. (Not in their new barracks in the city)
  • Ouch.

  • Oboreta realises that the rumours aren't about her so she rides ahead to separate herself from the Pale Horse.
  • She is then able to bask in the adulation of the crowd.
  • Stopping by a local wine merchant, Oboreta buys a bunch of (cheap) wine and distributes it amongst the crowd.
  • Aren't ME and the exalts (which includes ME) awesome?! but mainly ME!
  • Subtle.

  • The Dragonlord forms the Pale Horse up in the square in front of the temple.
  • She rides up the steps to the temple and makes a speech to all and sundry.
    • Dragonlord Tepet: "It has come to my attention that lies have been spread about our conduct. We did not ride off to abandon the town. We rode off to fight a battle which I won. A number of bandits that we were not aware of then attacked the town. We rode as fast as we could to get there, but by the time we arrived the fighting was already over. I then challenged the leader of the bandits to a duel, which I won. As part of my victory, the bandits were forced to leave, never to return. We did not run, we fought and bled"

  • Priest Aldbur is awaiting our presents in his office.
  • Shit! We didn't buy him anything!
  • Oh, you said presence...
  • A stranger is also in the room and is introduced as Wren.
  • Wren is dressed in mercantile garb but Wind Follower senses he is also a martial artist with a considerable number of secrets.
  • We'll get to him later - first we need to debrief about what happened at the village!

  • Condolences are shared for the death of Lord Carver.
  • His mother isn't taking it very well (understandable).
  • Oboreta believes that a man of Carver's stature and accomplishments should be celebrated.
  • She proposes two days of mourning for his death, followed by a day of celebration for his life.
  • Aldbur agrees - what he doesn't know is that the temple may be footing the bill...

  • There is some back and forth between Aldbur and the Dragonlord about who's fault it is that there was no-one there to defend the village when the bandits attacked.
    • Aldbur: "You abandoned the town."
    • Dragonlord: "I left them with the militia."
    • Aldbur: "Who believed you had abandoned them, and thus laid down their arms, according to my reports."
    • Dragonlord: "If you left the Glen and something you didn't know about attacked and only you could deal with it, would you blame yourself?"
    • Aldbur: "Yes, it would be my mistake."
  • Oboreta raises her discussion with the Bramblelord, King Bramble Hat XIV, Lord of Brambleton in which the wyld folk said he only escalated the conflict because of the presence of the mercenaries.
  • The Dragonlord challenges Oboreta to a duel to silence what she sees as slander and libel.
  • Oboreta refuses.
  • A small shouting match ensues which Aldbur silences.
    • Aldbur: "If the bandits attacked because of the presence of the Pale Horse, it is my mistake.
  • Wind Follower points out that the squabbling was non-productive and we should move on to other matters.
  • There are no other matters...
  • Meeting adjourned.

  • Aldbur asks Oboreta and Wind Follower to stay behind.
  • Wren can wait outside.
  • Aldbur has been doing some research into exalted beings courtesy of the newly re-organised library.
    • Oboreta: "How interesting, perhaps we could discuss it over dinner? Shall we say seven?"
    • Aldbur: "It is a pressing matter, that we should discuss now."
  • He didn't say no.
  • Aldbur asks if Wind Follower is hiding anything.
  • He shines his caste mark to indicate what he's talking about.
    • Aldbur: "Lady Oboreta could do this too."
    • Oboreta: "I could, but it would not be appropriate to show off."
  • Oboreta does show off anyway.
    • Wind Follower: "Well, I can't to that (indicating Aldbur's mark), or that (indicating Oboreta's mark), but I can do this."
  • BING
  • Wind follower doesn't know what they're talking about re: castes.
  • Read a book fool!
  • Aldbur is seemingly not worried about having two Solars in his Immaculate Temple.
  • He is annoyed because he forgot that they'd be stuck in there for fifteen minutes until the marks fade...

  • Wind Follower raises that he wants to leave Aldbur's service to act against the forces of the wyld.
  • To do so, he wants to be able to travel where he needs to and does not wish to be tied to a region.
  • This doesn't mean he'll abandon the city just yet, but when the time comes, he'll have to go.
  • Wind Follower also states that he does not wish to receive coin for services he freely offers.
  • Fair enough.

  • After the marks dim, Oboreta and Aldbur go off to discuss arrangements for the funeral.
  • Wind Follower is left with Wren, who has a few questions for him.
  • Guild related questions...
  • Wind follower is suspicious, but Wren's straight talking attitude encourages him to accept the stranger's words.
  • To further gain Wind Followers trust, Wren exposes the caste mark of the Dawn.
  • An accord is struck.
  • As their conversation winds up, Aldbur re-enters the room.
  • Wren's caste mark is still shining.
    • Aldbur: "Well, looks like I don't have to ask that question anymore."

  • The Dragonlord begins civil proceedings against Mr. Ronwood for slander.
  • She also prepares pamphlets and posters exposing the truth about what happened at the village of wood.
  • The propaganda goes up around the city and goes toward healing the rift between the inhabitants and the mercenaries.
  • She also sends a letter to the militia leaders, asking them to come to a meeting at the old barracks to discuss something important.

  • Oboreta also goes about putting up posters to advertise the festival of Carver.
  • Wind Follower goes back to what he knows, hunting and trapping.
  • Wren investigates the local guild members to work out who is rotten, and who is clean.

  • Wind Follower is selling his skins when someone buys the smallest skin for 'a handbag'.
  • They are clearly lying.
  • Folded inside the handful of cash the buyer gives him is a note.
  • Whatever the note says, it puts Wind Follower on edge.

  • On the first day of mourning, Aldbur makes a very nice speech.
  • Carver's deeds are amped up and he is made out to be more of an epic badass than he was.
  • The citizens are genuinely sad.

  • Wren is tailing someone who is tailing someone.
  • He can't make out who the subject of his subject's investigation is.
  • The three leave the town spaced out along the road.
  • As they leave the eyeline of the gate, the middle member of this string of people goes to stab the one in the lead.
  • Wind Follower neatly sidesteps it.
  • Wren goes running in to assist.
  • With a swift blow of his staff, the assailant is rendered unconscious.
  • They are also bleeding from a head wound.
  • May be concussed.
  • Fractured skull?
  • Oops...

  • An elaborate plan to get the unconscious body back into town without attracting notice is hatched.
  • Wind Follower will hunt down a large animal and gut it.
  • The insensate body will be ensconced within the corpse and dragged back into town.
  • Messy but it works.

  • While he is hunting, the prisoner comes round.
  • She is questioned by Wren while Wind Follower goes about butchering his kill.
  • This provides adequate intimidation that she doesn't even try to run.
  • Her only thought is that she doesn't want to die...
  • Fair.
  • She explains that she was ordered to kill Wind Follower by the Hooded Man.
  • The Hooded Man is currently in an internal Guild power struggle with the main rep - Sacred Dolphin.
  • Wren is here to stop that as the Hooded Man is likely to bring the Guild into disrepute.
  • More disrepute than it is already in that is...

  • Wren pays her to go stay with family out of town for a few months.
  • Gets her out of the city, one fewer variable to worry about.
  • Also, she was loyally following her boss's orders which makes her blameless in the eyes of the guild.
  • After she leaves, Wren asks Wind Follower about an amulet he found on the hapless guild agent.
  • It's a small black disk...
